TOURNAMENT NOTICE AND REGULATIONS

OVERVIEW

The 2026 Bahamas Championship is an elite over-the-board national championship event, featuring 10 of the strongest chess players in The Bahamas. Throughout 9 rounds, competitors will battle for $2,350 in prize money and the coveted title of 2026 Bahamas National Chess Champion.

The chess festivities will kick off with Round 1 on Friday, January 23rd, at 6:00 p.m. and end with the Awards Ceremony on Sunday, February 1st, following the conclusion of Round 9.

Fans will be able to watch the rounds online daily at the scheduled time at bahamaschessfederation.org.

Format: 10-Player Round Robin (9 Rounds)
Prize Fund: $2350
Directions to Boost Academy: Traveling north on Mackey Street, take a left at Wendy’s onto Palmdale Avenue. Boost Academy is the 3rd building on the right. All participants will receive a location pin.

Drawing of Lots - This will be held on Thursday, January 22nd, at 6 p.m. It is Mandatory. However, if a player cannot attend for a justifiable reason, then the Chief Arbiter will draw the Absent Player's lot. 
Round 1: Friday, January 23 - 6:00 p.m. until
Round 2: Saturday, January 24 - 9:00 a.m. until
Round 3: Saturday, January 24 - 2:30 p.m. until
Round 4: Sunday, January 25 - 9:00 a.m. until
Round 5: Sunday, January 25 - 2:30 p.m. until
Round 6: Friday, January 30 - 6:00 p.m. until

Round 7: Saturday, January 31 - 9:00 a.m. until
Round 8: Saturday, January 31 - 2:30 p.m. until
Round 9: Sunday, February 1 - 9:00 a.m. until
Awards Ceremony: Sunday, February 1 - 15 minutes after round 9

  • The Coveted title of 2026 Bahamas National Chess Champion
  • Automatic spot on the 2026 Olympiad Team (conditions apply)

Format – The tournament is a FIDE-rated event with a time control of 90 minutes plus a 30-second increment after each move.

Pairing Software – Swiss Manager

Arbiter – IA Andre White

Tournament Director – Curtis Pride, Sr.

Registration – Only qualified players with a current BCF membership may enter.

Entry Fee – $50

Tie-break System:
  1. Direct encounter
  2. Sonneborn-Berger
  3. Greater number of wins
  4. Koya​
Regulations – The FIDE Laws of Chess will govern the tournament.
 
30-minute default time: Players more than 30 (thirty) minutes late for a round shall forfeit that round. Players who withdraw or forfeit a game may not receive any prize money.
 
Draws: In the event of a claim for a draw under Article 9.2 of the FIDE Laws of Chess (three-fold repetition) or under Article 9.3 of the Laws (50-move rule), one of the Arbiters must be asked by the players to verify the claim.
 
No electronic devices: A metal detector will be in use. Electronic devices are not allowed in the tournament area. Mobile phones, laptops, and communication devices must be switched off and submitted to the designated area. Any violation of this policy shall result in forfeiture of that game.
 
The playing area closes after 10 minutes: Spectators, anyone who is not a player, an Arbiter, or an Organizer, will not be allowed in the playing area after the 10-minute media period at the beginning of each round.
 
All FIDE regulations will be enforced, including the two illegal moves. Please review the FIDE laws of chess.

  • BCF will not be held responsible for any loss, damage, or theft of personal property on the premises.
 
  • By registering for this event, the player acknowledges that he or she has read, understood, and agreed to the tournament regulations.
