BAHAMAS CHESS FEDERATION (BCF) HOSTS SUCCESSFUL CHESS ARBITER COURSE
The Bahamas Chess Federation (BCF) in Partnership with the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture and FIDE host first FIDE Arbiters online Seminar
The course was successful in achieving its goal to increase the number of chess arbiters in The Bahamas.
September 30, 2019 - As a result of the recently held FIDE Arbiter’s Seminar The Bahamas can boast of having seven new Arbiters. The BCF, in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and the World Chess Federation (FIDE), hosted the 68th internet based FIDE Arbiters' Seminar. The intensive three day Seminar, designed to train Arbiters, was held from 6th to 8th September 2019. The Arbiters’ Seminar is a certification and promotion course required by all National Arbiters to attain an Internationally recognized title FIDE Arbiter and subsequently an International Arbiter title. The Lecturer for the course was IA/IO/FI Hal Bond (CAN) FIDE Lecturer and the Assistant Lecturer was IA/IO Aris Marghetis (CAN).
Arbiters play a key role in the world of chess. Like a referee in basketball or an umpire in baseball, an Arbiter’s role is to preside over a match and make sure both players follow all the rules of the game. These chess experts have to know and judge every aspect of the game including, the board, the pieces, the chess clock, the speed and pace of play, the validity of moves that a player makes, scoring and the overall conduct of the players.
Seven Bahamians attended the Seminar, along with participants from the region including Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda and Guyana. Regional participants were grateful for the opportunity to become a certified arbiter.
In addition to the International Arbiter and FIDE Arbiter, The Bahamas now has seven more National Arbiters. Five (5) National Arbiters attained a FIDE Arbiter norm, beginning their journey towards a FIDE Arbiter Title. The Bahamas has also gained its first three female arbiters. Seminar participants passing the course are now certified to arbiter tournaments internationally.
“The Bahamas Chess Federation is moving forward at a high speed, in a good direction”, exclaimed Elton Joseph, President, Bahamas Chess Federation. He added: - “This seminar was a great opportunity and I am happy that our local players took full advantage of the event. BCF is also happy to have supported our regional allies, as we continue to work together towards the growth and development of chess throughout the region.”
The following participants succeeded in the test and they will be awarded a norm for the title of the FIDE Arbiter, after the approval of the next FIDE Presidential Board:
