Bahamas Junior Championship 2016
Junior chess champion of the Bahamas, Philip Hanna, claimed his third consecutive title on Sunday, August 14, after successfully defending his crown against the strongest juniors in the country. Placing second was the Bahamas' newest world titled chess player, Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Polina Karelina who finished a mere half point adrift. In third place was the country's first titled player Candidate Master (CM) Nathan Smith, a half point behind Karelina.
Out of a possible five points, Hanna scored 4.5, tripped up only by Smith with a draw. With her performance, Karelina won the Under 16 section and cemented herself as one of the top junior players. 11-year-old Smith--a gold medalist at both CARIFTA and CAC chess--remains the undisputed top Under 12 player and among the country's upper echelon.
The Bahamas Chess Federation is very proud of all the participants of the tournament. They performed exceptionally well in a tiring and mentally challenging competition. The federation congratulates the winners for their tenacity, and especially thank the wonderful players from the Bain and Grants Town chess club--part of the BCF's social outreach programme--for participating. The future of Bahamas chess is now.
