Bahamas Junior Chess Championship 2017

The Bahamas Junior Chess Championship took off on Saturday April 1st, 2017 and would  prove to be a firecracker of a tournament .  It encompassed 26 of the Bahamas' top thinkers and strategists from a variety of schools and all under the age of 20 years old.  Going in to the fourth of five rounds, there were two clear leaders tied with 3 wins: WCM Polina Karelina and CM Nathan Smith.  The winner of their match-up would have a comfortable point advantage over all of the players and cement a clear lead to the finish line to become this year's Bahamas Junior Champion.  As time ticked away WCM Polina Karelina had a clear advantage on time of some four to five minutes or more over CM Nathan Smith.  Based on positioning the game looked to be a drawn position -however CM Nathan Smith made an error in judgement which solidified the win for WCM Polina Karelina. She remained undefeated in the tournament.  Going in to the fifth and final round, CM Nathan Smith would seal a win against Tyren Gardiner from Tambearly School to secure his 2nd place overall standing. The third and final overall spot would be fought for by Delroy Stuart from the University of the Bahamas and Malik Sands from St. Agustine's College.  Malik Sands continued to place pressure on Delroy Stuart however in a fatal move- took a pawn with his Queen which ultimately led to Delroy's victory and  3rd place overall finish. The top three finishers claimed nice trophies along with a cash prize.  The tournament also saw new faces and small giants that were able to conquer large ones namely Adam Clarke who came away with a big win against Patrick Abaga. We would like to thank all of our parents who sacrificed two days to make this event a success and the participants who came out and gave it their all.  We look forward to seeing you all and more at our next scheduled event.
