CM Kendrick Knowles won Bahamas National Championship 2018
The Bahamas National Chess Championship 2018 was held over the last two weeks at the Coral Towers Atlantis hotel. Eight of the Bahamas’ strongest chess players competed in a 7 round, Round-Robin tournament, all hoping to take home the title of Bahamas National Champion 2018.
After 7 heart-pounding rounds of competition, the Candidate Master (CM) and National Master (NM) Byron Small and the Candidate Master (CM) and National Master (NM) Kendrick Knowles both ended up with 5.5 points out of 7 after the Last round.
In a rare event, the National Championship was forced into a playoff between the two players who were both already three time National Chess Champions. After the first round of tiebreaks, the two resilient players did not budge an inch and remained tied. The second round of tiebreaks then began with 5 minute Blitz style rounds, which finally decided the tournament.
The 49th Bahamas National Chess Champion Kendrick Knowles was presented with the Lindroth Floating Trophy, by the Mrs. Katie Longley the representative from Atlantis, while CM Byron Small came second and FIDE Master Carver Moncur with 5 points ended up 3rd. Bahamas Junior Chess Champion Woman Candidate Master Polina Karelina finished in 4th place with 4.5 points.
The BCF is proud at the level of competition of the players, and the great efforts they put in preparing for ahead of time for their opponent.
The BCF greatly appreciates the elegant room with amenities provided by Atlantis and commends the professionalism and helpfulness of the staff. We would also like to thank the Mednet Group of companies for providing lunch for the event, as well as Lindroth Development Company and New Providence Development Company their sponsorship of this event. This amazing event would not have been possible if not for our distinguished sponsors.
