CAC Youth Festival 2023 - Port-of-Spain, Trinadad & Tabago
The Bahamas junior players' outstanding performance in the Central America & Caribbean (CAC) Youth Chess Festival, held in Trinidad & Tobago from August 20-27, 2023 is evidence that the Bahamas is closing the gap and becoming more competitive in the CAC region.
The Bahamas fielded a team of four (4) players to compete in this premier event held each year exclusively for Central American and Caribbean countries. The top regional chess players in U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 age categories gather to compete for medals and titles, and to forge new friendships. This year, over 200 players from fifteen countries participated in the week-long, grueling nine-round tournament.
With each game lasting hours, physical stamina and mental toughness were equally as important as chess skill. Despite having hardly any experience playing long games and tournaments, our players overcame the pressure and were extremely competitive through all nine rounds. They won games against higher rated and more experienced players and did not lose any games easily. They fought all their opponents hard and long.
Out of a possible 9 points:
Carewyn Turnquest scored 6 points and finished 4th in the Under 8 Open Category.
Danica Rolle scored 4 points and finished 12th in the Under 10 Female Category.
Chika Pride scored 5 points and finished 6th in the Under 14 Female Category.
Avian Pride scored 5.5 points and finished 5th in the Under 16 Open Category.
We are grateful to Elton Joseph who did an awesome job coaching the team. Elton conducted a 4 weeks training camp for the players before the tournament and trained and coached them throughout the nine rounds.
We must also highlight our only serving female National Arbiter Angel Pride, who acted as the Arbiter for the U12 Category at the CAC Tournament. She is the first Bahamian female to Arbiter at a regional chess tournament.
The Bahamas Chess Federation is extremely proud of the CAC Youth Chess Team! We look forward to sending a larger team next year.
