CARIFTA Chess Championship 2016
Candidate Master Nathan Smith went unbeaten and cruised to a gold medal in the CARIFTA Chess Championships 2016 held in St. Criox, U. S. Virgin Islands from March 24-28, 2016.
Smith, aged eleven, competed in a Under-12 age category that featured twenty-two competitors from seven Caribbean countries. He never trailed in the seven-round contest, beating each of his opponents with the sole exception of a fifth-round draw against Aruba.
It was Smith's second career CARIFTA gold in as many tries, having won the Under-10 age category two years ago in Martinique. He also struck gold in the 2013 Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Youth Festival in Costa Rica -- a feat that earned him the official title of candidate master, awarded by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
Clearly the top Under-12 chess talent in the Caribbean, Smith looks forward to competing this summer when Venezuela hosts the next CAC Youth Festival.
