Fall Classic 2014
The Bahamas Chess Federation (BCF) staged its annual Fall Classic tournament on September 13-20, 2014. Along with the usual Open section for advanced players, a Reserve section for eager beginners was included for the first time.
Eighteen young chess stars, aged 7 to 16, gathered at T. G. Glover Primary School to test their skills against their peers. For many, it was their first experience playing the celebrated mind sport in a tournament setting. For others, it was an opportunity to put into practice some of the training that they had acquired over their short but enthusiastic chess careers.
The competition consisted of five rounds, each lasting up to fifty minutes. To instill the importance of planning and discipline, players were encouraged to think long and hard before making their next move--a useful lesson in chess as in life.
After nearly five hours of tense and exciting play, the victors were decided. Finishing first overall was Marfeeyou Joseph of C. R. Walker Senior High School, who won on tie-breaks against his older brother Bradley. Placing third overall was Davaughn Lopez, also hailing from the emerging chess powerhouse of C. R. Walker.
The age division winners were:
Under 8: Kamori Rolle (T. G. Glover Primary)
Under 10: Jake Oldfield (Eljay's Knights Chess Club)
Under 12: Chianycher Georges (T. G. Glover Primary)
Under 14: John Saintilma (Eljay's Knights Chess Club)
Under 16: Marfeeyou Joseph (C. R. Walker Senior High)
At the conclusion of the event, Andre White, president of the BCF, said "It was great to see these kids come out and play like they did. They clearly love the game and want so badly to learn and get better. We will be organizing more of these types of beginner tournaments and will also provide the players with formal training so that they see improvement."
Also participating in the tournament were youngsters from Grants Town Urban Renewal Center and Woodcock Primary School. The federation intends to expand the list of participating schools and clubs as the Beginner Series continues in October 2014 and beyond.
In the FIDE-rated Open section, it was CM Cecil Moncur who prevailed over the field of nine players. Moncur finished undefeated on 6 points, one point ahead of second-place finisher Chappell Whyms. Bahamas Junior Champion Philip Hanna rounded out the top three with 4 points from six rounds.
