Byron Small Wins Fall Classic 2019
FALL CHESS CLASSIC ATTRACTS A NUMBER OF NEW PLAYERS
The Fall Chess Classic took place over an intense three days, September 27 – 29. The tournament attracted twenty-one (21) chess players, including many new players. The Fall Chess Classic was the 3nd qualifier to determine who would fill the remaining spots at the upcoming 2019 Bahamas National Chess Championship. The Fall Chess Classic was a success with Candidate Master Byron Small emerging as the overall winner of the tournament. Valentine Cox and WCM Polina Karelina tied for second place.
The 2019 Bahamas National Chess Championship is a five day event which is scheduled to kick off on November 15th. The first qualifying event for the Championships was held in January with WCM Polina Karelina won that tournament with Candidate Master Cecil Moncur winning the third qualifier in May. Players for the upcoming Bahamas National Chess Championship include CM Kendrick Knowles, FM Cecil Moncur, CM Byron Small, WCM Polina Karelina, CM Nathan Smith, Gurth Smith, Chapell Whymns, NM Valentine Cox, Clive Stuart and Joseph Ferguson.
“I would like to extend a special thanks to the University of The Bahamas Chess Club for hosting the first round of the Fall Chess Classic”, said Elton Joseph, President, Bahamas Chess Federation. “I would particularly like to thank Ashley Gibson, President, University of The Bahamas Chess Club, for his help with the tournament.” He added: - “Congratulations to all those players who qualified to play in the upcoming 2019 Bahamas National Chess Championship. The event is one of the highlights on BCF’s calendar and I look forward to an exciting five days of competition amoung the best chess players in The Bahamas.”
