Kendrick Knowles Wins Heroes Blitz
Record Number of Chess Players Participate in 2019 Heroes Day Blitz
On 19 October 2019 a record forty-three (43) chess players competed in the fast paced Heroes Day Blitz. The annual tournament is held to celebrate local great heroes of the past and our modern-day heroes, including our chess heroes who have dedicated many years to help develop the cognitive skills of our people.
The Blitz style format of the tournament requires that players think quickly and keep a cool head. The term Blitz describes chess games with a time control of 10 minutes or less. The 2019 Heroes Day Blitz featured three sections: - Open Section, Junior Rook Section and the Bishop division for beginners.
The current National Champion Kendrick Knowles won the tournament. Clive Stuart secured second place, and Daijah Johnson and Nelissa Thomas tied for third place.
“The response for the 2019 Heroes Day Blitz was overwhelming. Many new players participated and the Blitz was a great learning experience for these new players and those attempting to improve their chess skills”, said Elton Joseph, President, Bahamas Chess Federation. He continued: - “I encourage all players, particularly less experienced players, to participate in more tournaments. Fighting on the battlefield against new enemies allows good improvement. I am assured that the future of chess in The Bahamas is bright.”
