Heroes Day Championship 2014
Nassau's chess talent spent the holiday weekend playing in the Bahamas Chess Federation's annual Heroes Day Championship. For the first time, the tourney was organized with three sections -- Beginner, Intermediate, and Open -- allowing balanced competition for all. And the rapid time control of 25 minutes ensured that play would be fast and exciting.
Entering the five-round event as Beginners were nine eager youngsters, most of whom were playing in their second tournament. They were joined by eight more-seasoned players in the Intermediate and Open sections.
Right from the start, things got interesting, as top-seeded CM Elton Joseph suffered a round one loss to C. R. Walker Senior High student Marfeeyou Joseph. No doubt, the Candidate Master felt a bit of rust having not competed since his successful trip in August to the Chess Olympiad in Norway. Nonetheless, it was a wakeup call for all that no one can be taken lightly in a rapid chess game. CM Joseph responded mightily to that call and swept the remaining rounds to finish on top of the Open section with four points.
In the Intermediate section, Marfeeyou Joseph's glory would not last long, as he lost in the second and third rounds, sending him sliding down the standings. One of those loses came courtesy of schoolmate Davaughn Lopez, who would go on to finish with three wins, one draw, and one loss -- enough for him to claim the top Intermediate prize.
Among the beginners, it was young upstart John Saintilma of ElJay's Knights Chess Club who outlasted his opponents. Saintilma went undefeated, scoring a perfect five points from his five games. He was followed in second place by James Joseph, another ElJay's Knight player, while St. Thomas Moore student, Godwin Paul, finished third. Congratulations to all of the beginners for their well-played games. Their skills are definitely improving!
