Heroes Day Championship 2015

Chess players of all ages came out to participate in this year's Heroes Day Chess Championship.  The five-round event was held on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at T. G. Glover Primary School and featured thirty six players divided between a Beginner and an Open section.

​With a sudden death time control of twenty five minutes, both skill and quick thinking were critical in the tournament, and some players were able to adapt better than others.  Chief among them was Philip Hanna Jr., who outlasted his Open section opponents with the exception of candidate master Nathan Smith.  In their fourth-round match, a draw was agreed.

In the end, Hanna finished in first place on 4.5 points, followed by Byron Small with 4.0 points.  Ten-year-old Smith placed third with 3.5 points.

In the Beginner section, it was John Saintilma who rose to the occasion.  The C. I. Gibson Senior High student walloped all of whom he faced, amassing a perfect 5.0 points in the process and finishing in first place.

Winning silver was Richmard Justilien of L. W. Young Junior High School, whose only loss came at the hands of Saintilma.  Third place went to Zachary Carey of Gerald Cash Primary School.  Like Justilien, Carey's only blemish was a loss to Saintilma, and place standings was decided on tie breaks.
