Father and Son Capture Top Spots in New Providence Open
The Bahamas Chess Federation held the New Providence Open 2019 on January 27th and 28th. Many participants attended this tournament hoping to take home the Cash Prize. For the junior players, this was the first qualifier for the CARIFTA Trials, with the second qualifier to be held in the month of February. It was a very successful tournament as many players, Senior and Junior, were able to get much-needed experience in preparation for international competition.
It was refreshing to see fathers competing in the same tournament alongside their sons. We thank them for participating and thank all the parents who brought their kids out. As well as the top players who are helping to mold the next generation of Bahamian chess players.
The battle for first place was epic, as two World Chess Federation (FIDE) titled masters competed for the top spot. Unfortunately, neither of them was able to dominate the other and the round ended with a draw.
Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Polina Karelina and Candidate Master (CM) Nathan Smith, both juniors players, tied with 4.5 out of 5 points for First place. Gurth Smith, one of the two fathers in the tournament with his son, came Third place.

Honorable mentions for the up and coming junior players, Jake Oldfield, Van Orence, Noah Albury and Seth Roberts who all performed admirably attaining over 50% in the tournament. Also to all of the junior players who participated, the BCF is proud of the time and effort they all put in.
