Royal Bahamas Defence Force Family Fun Day 2014
Record numbers turned out for the Bahamas Chess Federation's (BCF) annual Family Fun Day chess tournament last Saturday, held at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Coral Harbour Base. A total of thirty four players registered for the one-day event.
The format of five, 10-minute rounds attracted players of all ages and skill levels, and two sections were established to level the competition. An Open section fielded fourteen intermediate to advanced players, and a Beginner section comprised of twenty rookies, many of whom were playing in their first formal chess tournament. The young up-and-comers were largely represented by the Bains and Grants Town Chess Club and the ElJay's Knights Chess Club of Kemp Road. These community clubs formed out of the dedicated efforts of Elton Joseph, Minister Laura, and Fanny Oldfield who believe strongly that chess can teach valuable life lessons to all who take part in the celebrated sport.
After five quick and tense rounds of play, the victors were decided. In the Beginners section, John Saintilma of ElJay's Knights emerged as the top player with 4.5 points. He was followed closely by Jake Oldfield and Kenny Joseph, each with 4.0 points. Philip Hanna Jr. dominated the Open section, finishing undefeated with 5.0 points. He was trailed by Ramus Brown and candidate master Nathan Smith, with 4.0 points each.
Commander Phillip Clarke of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force stood on hand to graciously present the trophies and medals to the top finishers.
