Scholastic Individual 2012
March 19, 2012
On Saturday past, twenty-one students converged on the beautiful T. G. Glover Primary School campus to compete in the 2012 Scholastic Individual chess tournament. In this first junior event of the Bahamas Chess Federation's calendar, the students -- aged 8 to 14 -- put their deepest mental skills to the test for five rounds until a clear winner was decided.
Displaying tremendous stamina and technique, 12-year-old Sandeep Gali, of St. John's College, went undefeated with a perfect score of 5/5. Finishing in second place after losing to Sandeep in the fifth and final round was Nelissa Thomas, of Queen's College, with an impressive score of 4/5. Polina Major, of See Saw Christian Academy, also scored 4/5 and placed third based on tiebreaks.
In the Under 10 category, first-time tournament player Franz Adiao, a 9 year-old from St. Francis and Joseph Primary, won top honors with a final score of 2.5/5. The silver medal in the U10 category went to 8-year-old Rajdeep Gali.
In the Under 12 category, the top prize was awarded to 10-year-old Polina Major of Queen’s College; the silver medalist was 11-year-old Kelsie Thomas, also of Queen’s College.
In the Under 14 category, Sandeep Gali placed first, followed by 12-year-old Chaz Garroway, of Queen’s College, who scored a very competitive 4/5.
The Under 16 category was won by 14-year-old Nelissa Thomas, while the silver medal was awarded to 15-year-old Kieran Diggiss, of St. Andrew’s School.
All other participants received bronze medals for their outstanding effort and sportsmanship throughout the event. The next scholastic tournament on the BCF schedule is the Scholastic Team competition, which will pit school against school on June 16th. More details can be found of the Federation’s 2012 Calendar of Events.
Congratulations to all!
