PictureThe Bahamas' 2014 CARIFTA Team - (L to R) CM Nathan Smith, Philip Hanna, and Chaz Garraway
The Bahamas Chess Federation hosted its annual Scholastic Individual at T. G. Glover Primary School on Saturday, March 15, 2014, which this year served as the qualifier for the important CARIFTA Junior Chess Championship scheduled for April 18 in Martinique.

The field was a mix of veterans and inexperienced, with three players completely new to tournament chess.  After four exciting rounds, the victors were decided:

Under 8: Gabrielle Adiao
Under 10: CM Nathan Smith
Under 12: Daijah Johnson
Under 14: Malik Sands
Under 16: Chaz Garraway
Under 18: Philip Hanna Jr.

Based on the results within the broader CARIFTA age categories, the three-man Martinique squad was announced:

Under-12: CM Nathan Smith
Under-16: Chaz Garraway
Under-20: Philip Hanna Jr.

Smith, Garraway, and Hanna each have competed internationally and hope to use their combined experiences to bring home The Bahamas' first medal in CARIFTA chess.  Good luck to the team!!
