Scholastic Team Championship 2018
Tambearly Titans, Queens College Comets and Nimble Minds – Chess Champions for 2018!
Thanks to the support of the Mednet Group of Companies, the BCF held its largest Scholastic Team Championship in recent memory. Nineteen teams comprising seventy four juniors registered for the event, including three community clubs. Brimming with excitement, players from all over New Providence traveled to Tambearly School to proudly represent their school.
The following schools had representatives at the annual chess extravaganza: Aquinas College, Queens College, Tambearly School, S. C. McPherson, T. A. Thompson Junior, Garvin Tynes, St. Thomas Moore, Kingsway Academy, New Providence Classical, Bahamas Global Academy, Eva Hilton, Woodcock Primary, Meridian School, Windsor Prep, T.G. Glover and Summit Academy.
The Queens College Comets conquered the High School division for the second year in a row. Hoisting three team flags, QC showed that they were not coming to play around and allow any other school to have their Title. The three Comet teams placed in the top 3; Michael Budhi lead QC3 to first place, Aaron Ramtulla lead QC2 to second place and school club president Sean Knowles lead QC1 to a third-place finish.
Tambearly, the host school for the tournament, proved that they were not about to get defeated on home turf. Sending the most troops to battle, they fought hard to improve after last year’s third place finish. And that is what they did, taking home first, second, and third place in the Primary School division. TB3 (Grade 4 ) lead by Giovanni Russo took the first place trophy, in second was TB5 (Grade 6) lead by Jalya Cargil, and in third was TB4 (Grade 5) lead by Obriel Symmonett.
Three clubs participated in the event, two for the first time. Nimble Minds lead by Arik Rolle took first place while the BGT Club lead by Trinity Pinder took second and Chessmasters lead by Adam Clarke took third.
The Bahamas Chess Federation thanks all the kids and parents for attending the event. The BCF also thanks Mrs. Alice Langford, principal of Tambearly School, for hosting the tournament and to all the teachers who assisted throughout the day. Through great partnerships with supportive organizations and great teamwork from board members and volunteers, the event was an enormous success.
