Scholastic Team Chess Championship 2014
Queen's College emerged last weekend as the country's dominant school in the sport of chess, winning the Scholastic Team Chess Championship for the third year straight.
Forty two players representing twelve teams gathered at T. G. Glover Primary School on June 14 to play out the annual contest, many of whom were newcomers to the royal game that has been growing in popularity throughout The Bahamas. With ages ranging from seven to eighteen, the youngsters were eager to put their thinking skills to the ultimate test against their peers in this all-day affair.
The Queen's College team, made up of Sandeep Gali, Chaz Garraway, Nicholas Bower, and Sean Knowles, set the pace with a 2-1 victory in round one. The "Comets" continued their domination with round two and three sweeps of C. W. Sawyer Primary and Anatol Rodgers. St. Augustine's College and C. R. Walker were Q. C.'s final challengers, and neither were able to slow down the defending champions. Of the 15.0 game points available to them over the five rounds, Queen's College's players accumulated an impressive 12.5 points.
Placing second overall was the "mixed" team of Philip Hanna (Bahamas Academy), Jake Oldfield (St. Andrew's School), and William Diggiss (Meridian School). In third place was St. Augustine's College. Rounding out the top five were C. R. Walker and Anatol Rodgers, both playing in their first chess competition.
In the primary school division, the C. W. Sawyer team of Daijah Johnson, Rickia Ellis, Deja Dorsett, Nathaniel Stubbs, and Jordan Moxey bested the field, followed by Woodcock Primary and T. G. Glover who finished second and third respectively.
The students now gear up for the Bahamas Junior Chess Championship, scheduled for August, when Sandeep Gali will defend his title for the second year in a row.
