The results of the 2019 Warren Seymour Chess Classic demonstrate that the future of chess in the Bahamas is bright. The Warren Seymour Classic is an open tournament at which junior and senior players square off against each other. The Tournament took place over the weekend of April 13th at the Centerville Medical Center. The event was sponsored by The Mednet Group of Companies. For the first time in the history of this tournament, the top three (3) overall scorers were junior players. The Warren Seymour Classic is a Qualifier for the prestigious Bahamas National Chess Championship held in November.
In the open category, WCM Polina Karelina successfully defended her title as the winner of the Warren Seymour Chess Classic. CM Nathan Smith won second place and Philip Hanna placed third in the open category. Open category in chess refers to a competition in which anyone can participate regardless of age or experience.
In the Junior section of the 2019, Warren Seymour Chess Classic Noah Albury won first place. Manan Pawha earned a second place finish. Curtis Pride and Diana Williams tied for third place. As is tradition at this tournament, in addition to their medals, the Junior section winners also received books to help improve their skills.
The Warren Seymour Classic is named in Honor of Bahamian Hero Warren Seymour. Mr. Seymour committed over 30 years of his life to growing the sport of chess in the Bahamas and contributing to the development of hundreds of young Bahamians. During his prime, Mr. Seymour selflessly visited over thirty (30) schools a month training young men and women in critical thinking and helping them to develop good decision-making skills. Without any financial gain, he also taught chess at correctional facilities and assisted in the rehabilitation of prisoners.
"I am pleased with the effort all of the players put into their games at the 2019 Warren Seymour Classic, particularly the junior players”, said Elton Joseph, President, Bahamas Chess Federation. He continued: - “It is clear that many of our young players are improving at an impressive rate. I hope this will help motivate all our players to improve." Mr. Joseph added: “The performance of the young players at the Warren Seymour Classic is particularly significant as it is a testament to the countless hours Mr. Seymour committed to youth development in The Bahamas. Honoring Mr. Seymour with this tournament is only a small token of gratitude for the great work he has done over the years.”
