Warren Seymour Classic 2020
FM Moncur Wins tournament to Qualify for Chess Olympiad Team
- The BCF held its 8th Warren Seymour Classic on the 7th and 8th of March. This important tournament attracted eighteen players made of up of Open and Junior players. The players competed in an exciting 5 round Swiss event .
The Mednet Group of Companies supported this great event honoring Mr. Warren Seymour, the “Father of chess in the Nation,” who dedicated over 35 years teaching critical and consequential thinking to kids in over 30 schools. His passion also spurred him to conduct classes at the Holy Spirit Anglican Church, and for many years to use chess as a rehabilitation tool at The Bahamas Department of Corrections (HMP). The BCF honors this great Bahamian for his sacrifice and dedication to the development of our Nation.
The improvement of both the Junior and Senior players was evident during the 2020 Warren Seymour Classic. Congratulations to Mr. Clive Stuart, whose performance in the tournament garnered him the highest FIDE rating improvement. In the last round, Mr. Stuart was well-positioned to take the first-place spot based on the results of the final game in Round 5, but FIDE Master Moncur fought passionately past a draw to claim a win in the last round. This resulted in Mr. Moncur seizing victory in the Open Category and securing a spot on the Olympiad team.
The 4 Junior players who attained 3 points out of 5 performed exceptionally well as these young players came close to taking down some of the top senior players, but experience won in the end.
The BCF is proud of all the players and we are happy with the growth, skill level, and enthusiasm of our members. We look forward to their continued development.
