Kendrick Knowles and Carver Moncur Both Qualify for CM Title!

Kendrick Knowles and Carver Moncur both hit their strides at the same time in these final rounds, and together with Elton Joseph, they helped to propel Team Bahamas to three straight match wins.  Kendrick's and Carver's hard work and detailed preparation for this Olympiad seems to have paid off mightily when today they both hit the minimum 50% score requirement for the Candidate Master (CM) title.  This marks The Bahamas' third title qualification of this Olympiad, after Elton achieved a 50% score through eight rounds.  The unofficial list of new CM's can be found at http://chess-results.com/tnr140380.aspx?lan=1&art=59&fed=NCA&flag=30&wi=821.

The trio on boards 2, 3, and 4 has performed far beyond their rating levels, fending off a host of 2000-rated players.  Once verified, the titles will be a fitting demonstration that Bahamas chess is on a steep rise, and the world had better take notice.

Now, on to the eleventh and final round -- Bahamas vs Nicaragua.  The match will take place on Thursday morning, 11:00 am Tromso time (5:00 am ET), after a well-deserved day off.  Tune in live at https://chess24.com/en/olympiad2014.

Gentlemen, well done on earning your CM titles. Like your team mate Elton, I believe that you all will serve to inspire chess players in The Bahamas for years to come. Furthermore, as first time Chess Olympiad participants, your experiences will enrich the chess culture in The Bahamas. All the best in your final round.

I am indeed impressed. Seems like you guys were really learning some stuff while I was gone (Lol). As I watch you play, I'm seeing the maturity - good stuff. Congratulations on all of your accomplishments thus far!

I do hope however, that you guys use your talents to teach and encourage the up-and-coming generation of chess players in the country. I think the BCF should continue to coordinate training sessions throughout the islands and all of you should play significant roles in furthering that initiative. Along with finding a reasonable home for the BCF, the countywide promotion and development of chess has been one of my mantras - it has been Kean's, and I'm happy to see that Andre too has also grabbed that bull by its horn! It's a challenging battle, but one that has to be fought until we reap the kind of dividends that we are expecting.

There are not that many of us who understand how significant this intellectual sport can be to youth development and, by extension, nation building and I believe that those of us who 'get it', ought to lead the way in championing that cause. Our country is a small one and we really don't have that many players of this ilk, so I trust that those of us with the passion and drive continue to use that fervor to do the right things. Okay that's my five cents - well more like 25! But I am excited about the future of chess in The Bahamas and with all of your accomplishments at this Olympiad (I do believe it's our best performance to date), as a team I think you should use your success to further promote the value of chess play to national development.

Again I wish you well on your last round of play and I hope that the significance of this moment coupled with the value of your time and efforts continue to pay off for each of you, long after your return home!

Congratulations team Bahamas on your 3rd win and in particular to Kendrick, Carver and Elton on qualifying for the CM title. Very good play, I see your progress. Best wishes for the last round and kudos to Andre for having orchestrated what is perhaps the best international result for a Bahamian chess squad. Go 242!
